FIT is the feature film adaptation of Stonewall’s highly successful play for schools aimed at tackling homophobic bullying - and seen by more than 20,000 students around the country. Interactive DVDs of FIT will be sent out to every secondary school in Britain.

Ryan Haynes speaks to Rikki Beadle-Blair and some of the actors behind the real characters in the film.

The Transgender Day of Remembrance is an annual event, a day set aside to memorialize those who were killed due to anti-transgender hatred or prejudice.

Kwabena Osaynde from Advantage West Midlands explains why they funded the LGBT Consortium Annual Meeting

Jagdish has worked across the commercial, voluntary and public sectors. He is a trained solicitor with specialist knowledge in Employment Law, Anti-Discrimination and Human Rights Law and is a member of the Institute of Leadership Management.
Through his work in the legal sector, he has actively helped members of the LGB&T community affected by discrimination, harassment and victimisation to seek redress and positive outcomes.
Jagdish returned to working for the Commission for Racial Equality within its Legal and Enforcement Directorate to support organisations and individuals on matters of equality and human rights and is now a senior policy adviser to the Equality and Human Rights Commission - The new commission is working to eliminate discrimination, reduce inequality, protect human rights and to build good relations, ensuring that everyone has a fair chance to participate in society.
The Equality and Human Rights Commission acts not only for the disadvantaged, but for everyone in society, and can use its new enforcement powers where necessary to guarantee people’s equality. It also has a mandate to promote understanding of the Human Rights Act.
The Equality and Human Rights Commission is a non-departmental public body established under the Equality Act 2006 – accountable for its public funds, but independent of government.

Jack gives some insight on how young people can get money to fund activities and projects in their local community

An equality impact assessment (EqIA) is a tool for identifying the potential impact of a council’s policies, services and functions on its residents and staff. It can help staff provide and deliver excellent services to residents by making sure that these reflect the needs of the community.

This workshop will focus on raising awareness of the Equality Impact Assessment process; what this is, how it is carried out and why it is relevant to your organisation with regards to your organisation’s awareness of equality and diversity and how this has to be evidenced prior to working with the public sector.

Resources will be provided which will consist of work books that contain updated legislation on the various equality schemes and a pro forma as to how to carry it out.

This session will be run by VCS Engage which was a programme funded by the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) to strengthen the engagement of the Voluntary and Community Sector (VCS) in delivering the Every Child Matters: Change for Children Agenda.

The workshop will therefore be most relevant to those organisations engaging in service delivery for children and young people.

The workshop will look at:
• What Local Area Agreements are
• How they are monitored
• Linking services to Local Area Agreements

Our Survey Said: How the Bradford LGB Health Needs Assessment improves health care

Bradford Health Needs Assessment
This health survey carried out the first ever comprehensive research into the health needs of the LGB communities in Bradford. Published in October 2007 and launched at a high profile multi-agency conference at the Thornbury Centre, it profiled health needs, raised awareness of them and will influence the improvement of services. The survey was carried out with the support of the Bradford and Airedale tPCT, Bradford Teaching Hospitals Foundation Trust, Bradford Council and the University of Bradford. The work was praised by Trevor Phillips, Chairman of the Equalities and Human Rights Commission: “projects such as this are bringing communities together and tackling issues faced by some of the people encountering the greatest inequalities.”
The workshop will:
• Provide background to how the survey was carried out
• Reveal the health needs of the LGB communities of Bradford
• Share ideas about how to measure health outcomes

Financial Inclusion for LGBT youth aims to ensure that young people have the necessary skills and knowledge to make informed decisions and manage money effectively. Ensuring financially literate LGBT young people decreases the likelihood of exclusion from financial services and the wider economy.

This session will be a taster session of the Young People and Money training designed and run by the Financial Services Authority (FSA) to provide relevant training in relation to financial literacy; focusing on signposting of relevant agencies; vital information to accessing financial literature; and dissemination of key resources to delegates.

Delegates will also have the opportunity to feedback on any LGBT specific issues and hurdles to financial literacy for inclusion in the development of future FSA training modules.

This session will be run by Birmingham Bi Group, a local support group in the Midlands for people who are Bisexual or Bicurious.

The session will explore and discuss what it means in today’s society to be bisexual or Bicurious, and how to ensure the full inclusion of Bisexuality within the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans (LGBT) community.

Gender variance can be experienced at any age, even as young as two. It impairs the young person's achievements at school. If revealed, it frequently results in bullying, which intensifies the stress that these youngsters already have to deal with and impairs their learning. Transgender members of staff also experience stress. If they undertake the transition to from the gender role assigned to them at birth to that which accords with their gender identity, they too become the targets for transphobic bullying and crime.

Bullying that is not dealt with well and promptly can escalate into criminality. As part of its crime reduction programme, the Home Office has commissioned the Gender Identity Research and Education Society (GIRES) to develop toolkit to help schools meet their obligation to combat transphobic bullying: http://www.gires.org.uk/transbullying.php

The GIRES workshop will describe the toolkit and provide an opportunity to discuss how it can be used in schools.

The workshop will aim to answer the following questions:

• What is the Jigsaw initiative and why is this London based project nationally significant?
• How does Jigsaw incorporate the Every Child Matters objectives?
• Why are LGBT young people more likely to become homeless?
• What are the experiences of LGBT homeless young people?
• How does joined up services improve outcomes for homeless LGBT young people?
• Why do we need specialist LGBT homelessness services?
• Why is young people’s participation fundamental in the shaping and delivery of services?
• How can I better respond to the needs of homeless LGBT young people?

In addition we will also have:
• In my own words… a young LGBT person shares their experiences of youth homelessness.

The workshop considers what people mean by ‘refugee’ or ‘asylum seeker’, what issues are faced by LGBT refugees/asylum seekers, how this relates to an equalities agenda, what actions can be taken to support equality for LGBT refugees amongst the broader population and amongst other LGBT people, and gaps and priorities for action.

FYi RADiO joined the Chroma Journal at Gays The Word Bookshop in London to record a special following the publication of their winter issue.

Several contributors and poets perform their literature to a live audience and to you queer alternative FYi RADiO listeners.

Tim and Ryan take a trip to the London Trans Film Festival 08 to find out more about trans issues facing people today. The intrepid twosome talk to trans people about identity, gender and other issues facing the trans community, with their trademark honesty, and get suitably candid answers!

Ryan takes virginal Ray on her first ever Pride London; and boy does she get off to a start!

The pair interview as many performers and presenters as possible, as well as many merry Pride-goers in and around Trafalgar Square.

Intrepid Ryan manages on-the-spot interviews with gay hiphop artist MC Envy, singer-songwriter Sandi Thom, performer Shena, The Pretty Route and Roxy Rawson, as well as some handy sexual health advice from Dr Christian Jessen of TV’s Embarrassing Illnesses fame.
